Course Introduction

Optics is leading the laser beam by form of splitting, bending, reflecting, combining, expanding, condensing, shaping and focusing. In sophisticated and high end system, engineer would like to achieve achromatic (color correction for more than twpo wavelength), telecentric beam, finest spot size, longer depth of focus and longer life span of the laser optics.

The short course is designed with the help of ZEMAX software and real field experience from the team of engineers and researchers. Attendants will benefit from the course and gain knowledge on following areas:

1.       Laser optical system simulation by ZEMAX

2.       Spot size of focused beam

3.       Depth of focus

4.       Beam expansion Vs. spot size

5.       Effective focal length Vs. spot size

6.       Scan area and beam profile analysis

7.       Laser beam divergence, propagation, Gaussian beam, Multi-Mode beam (Donut, etc)

8.       Selection of coating for laser optics

9.       How to prolong optics life

10.   Vision / Laser Optics in one path (Achromatic correction)

All the topics will be simulated by the ZEMAX software for your visualization.

I would like to hereby request your assistance in finding an appropriate partner locally in NTU or A-Star who could provide some assistance in simulating RF characteristics of opto electronic packages. Could you please recommend of suggest individuals or research labs who would be interested in taking up such work as free lance or service to Schott?

Your attention to the matter and brief response would be deeply appreciated.

Best Regards

Postdoctoral Fellows are needed at the Koç University Microphotonics Research Laboratory <http://microphotonics.ku.edu.tr/> in the area of silicon photonics. Koç University Postdoctoral Fellowhips <http://postdoc.ku.edu.tr/> are available to qualified candidates. The fellowship award is for one year. Fellowships may be renewed for an additional year. Maximum duration is two years. Fellows are expected to be full-time researchers at the Koç University working closely with their faculty mentors. They will have no teaching obligations unless separate arrangements are made in exceptional cases. Applicants must have earned their Ph.D. degree from an accredited university before their fellowship starts.

The fellowship includes:

* 3,800 TL monthly stipend (gross)
* housing
* a research fund of 1,500 TL (1 TL is approximately 0.5 Euro)
* participation in the University’s group health insurance plan for fellows

An interested person should contact Prof. Serpengüzel at aserpenguzel@ku.edu.tr

Laser and Applications is a broad area and you need to be a bit more specific as to what specifically you are looking at.
In 2007 the Asian College of Engineering (ACOE) organised a workshop on Biophotonics and this year we are planning one on Lasers in Precision Engineering

There are quite a few small as well as large companies in Singapore doing optics. I am not sure if anyone has the complete list. We would be most interested in this and one of the possible reason to set up this society.

I would like to have some information on optics, lasers and laser applications in Singapore. How many manufacturers or/and resellers or distributors in Singapore? How about annual turnover in Singapore? What can we do for the optics industry? Any comments or suggestions are welcome!
